SymFTP (Symbian)

SymFTP turns your smart phone into a portable FTP server allowing you to send files to and from your phone from any FTP client over a WIFI connection.

Remove the need to carry annoying usb cables around with you any time you want to transfer files to and from your device. Instead do the following:

  1. Start SymFTP
  2. Open the settings tab and select the drive you want to share
  3. Press the “Save Settings” button, then press the power button
  4. Open the file browser on your computer
  5. In the address bar, type the address displayed by SymFTP and press enter
  6. Begin copying files to and from you device hastle free!

And because the FTP protocol is understood by computers everywhere it means no extra software needs to be installed on your computer even if you’re using Windows, Mac Or Linux!

Features:

  • Simple Interface, one button press to start and stop the server
  • Configurable options page
  • Integrated help page for those unsure of how to use the app

Help!

When I change the drive on SymFTP and press “Save Settings”, the listing on my FTP Client doesn’t change

This happens because the FTP protocol specification says that root directories should start with “/” and many FTP clients (like filezilla) don’t refresh directory listings for directories they have already traversed. This means when you change the drive you share on SymFTP for example from c:/ to e:/ they server displays them as “/” which the client doesn’t recognise as a change. To get around this you can force a refresh of a directory by right clicking and pressing refresh!

Works on:

  • All Symbian 3 Devices*
  • All S60v5 Devices With WIFI

*excluding the new Nokia E6 because of its different resolution

Get SymFTP over at the Ovi Store

SymFTP recently received an excellent review from All About Symbian, read it here

I started one before QML was allowed on symbian devices but scrapped it when QML was released as it just wasn’t up to standard imo, I really need to put polls up after each app i release asking you guys what you’d like next, I’ve actually got my next 2 apps lined up. SymNote is due in a few days and the following one has to be done as part of getting an N950. But look out for that poll!

Can you add a Dyndns client to it so I can access the phone with a fixed address?  Just asking :)

    Hi,
I tried your app and I liked it, so I’ve purchased it but there is problem, it shares only C drive even if I change the drive and save the settings it keeps showing me the same folders.
I have Nokia C7 with Symbian Anna update.

I have a problem with the selection of the drive in the full version: I can select D: or E: but the server still only shares the C: drive.

So I should let you know my Use-Case.  I want to use this to manage files on fleet phones.  It would be nice if this worked on 3G and not just on Wifi!  That would require some sort of DNS resolution (could be linked to DynDNS) for the phone since I won’t be calling up the phone everytime to find the IP Address.
The reason I need to manage files on the phones is this:  The vehicles are away for up to 2 weeks, and they are offline much of the time, but require files during the offline periods.  I like the idea of the app, thanks.  I haven’t found anything since the experimental Nokia Server app! http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/mobile-web-server
