SymNote (Symbian)

SymNote is a “SimpleNote” App for Symbian Smartphones
SymNote lets you make notes and keep them up to date wherever you are. Notes edited on the desktop can be set to automatically sync to your phone every time the app starts up.

SymNote even works when don’t have a data connection available, storing the note changes or new notes in its internal database, then pushing them to the SimpleNote servers the next time a sync is performed.

Features:

  • Downloads your last 100 SimpleNote notes to your phone
  • Can be set to auto sync on start up
  • Split entry to make editing notes easier (Supported in Symbian 3 and Symbian Anna)
  • Create new notes
  • Editing existing notes
  • View meta data about notes
  • Add Tags / Share notes to other people
  • Delete and un-delete notes
  • Pin / unpin notes to / from the top of the note list
  • Option to change note font size (beneficial to E6 users)
  • Filter notes by status : All / Current / Deleted / Un-Synced
  • Display notes by Tag
  • Search for notes based on a keyword based on their tag or the note content
  • Update and create notes offline
  • Indicators for pinned, shared, edited and locally changed only notes in the list view

The first time you open the app you will either need to log in or sign up to the SimpleNote service:

After the first log in your SimpleNote list will automatically be synced to your phone, this downloads your last 100 notes to your phone. There is a search bar at the top of the note list that allows you to filter the notes displayed based on words found in the notes. The list view shows you the note title and the last time it was edited as well as providing more information about the note using visual indicators for the following things where necessary:

List View

  • Star Icon: Note is pinned to the top of the list
  • Sideways RSS / Wifi icon: Note is shared with other people
  • Chat Icon: Note has been edited by someone else who is sharing the note
  • Pen icon: Local changes have occurred to this note and it needs to be pushed to the SimpleNote server.

The menu in the list view provides a sub menu that allows you to filter the items in the note list by their status.

The tag button on the toolbar allows the filtering of notes based on tags assigned to them. Closing the tag filter using the X clears the tag filter.

Pressing on a note or the “+” icon to create a new note, takes you to the editor.
Editor

The editor has a split keyboard implementation so you can see the rest of your note as you edit it. The keyboard becomes visible after pressing on an area of the note you wish to start editing.

Pressing the info button on the toolbar flips the note page over and presents you with meta data about the note as well as giving you the option to add and remove tags.

OLED Info PaneThe editor view’s menu allows the pinning / unpinning of notes, ability undo any unsaved changes, fetch the note again from the server, delete the note and switch to a larger font (for high resolution devices like the E6).

There is also an option to switch the editor to an AMOLED friendly dark theme. This change also affects the Info Pane.

AMOLED Editor

The app allows the user to decide how syncs should be performed on start up. Some people prefer an automatic sync on start up others prefer the option to be able to do it manually.

SymNote also has keyboard support for devices like the E6.
Get SymNote over at the Ovi Store.

Works on all Symbian 3 Devices!

App InfoSymNote got an outstanding review over at The Tech Bishop, read it here.
All About Symbian gave SymNote an excellent review too. Read it here.

Symnote is great but two things would be nice in the next release:

Dark theme – i.e. battery friendly on Symbian ^3/Anna devices.
    Save font size on exit.

    • http://www.talvbansal.com Talv

Saving the font size should already work, but I’ve just checked it looks like a silly bug thanks for pointing it out.

The first update to SymNote is already in QA at the Ovi store so it will have to go into the following bug fix release.

The black theme is do-able but breaks the magnifier which just shows a black circle so ill have to look into it some more.

Great Talv, do you think it will be possible to use SymNote on S60v5?

    • http://www.talvbansal.com Talv

Only if Nokia port QtComponents to Symbian1

      • Peter

I would be very delighted if SymNote would run on S60v5. The reason is, that on my Nokia 5800 none of the browsers installed, Opera included, manages the web portal simplenoteapp.com.

Is it support Symbian S60v3??? I cant download it from Ovi.. Coz it said “Sorry, this item is not available for your country.” :(

    • http://www.talvbansal.com Talv

The app is only for Symbian 3 Sorry

  • escocossu

Is it possible to obtain N9?

    • http://www.talvbansal.com Talv

MeeNote will be coming out for MeeGo soon I’m just finishing it off now, follow my twitter feed for more details :)

Any plans on creating translations of SymNote & SymPaper?

    • http://www.talvbansal.com Talv

unlikely i dont have the time to gather up enough proper translations and implement them, i asked on twitter if people wanted them i only got one reply so i dont think theres enough of demand for me to warrant doing them.

What I wouldn’t give, for a Symbian app to use with Evernote. . .

    • http://www.talvbansal.com Talv

Im frequently asked to create an evernote app but I have no plans to since the api looks horrendous to use it was actually one of the main reasons i chose SimpleNote over EverNote and SpringPad. My next new couple of apps will be for WP7, after which i might create Symbian versions of them but it depends on how much my Symbian phone usage decreases now i have a Lumia 800.

    Hello,

I start using the application on my nokia E7 and found some points that could improve the fluentness of the application
    - When I’m abroad I desactivate the Internet automatic access to avoid to high roaming costs.  Symnote try after each time I click on the “save” note icon in the note edit screen to sync, producing a pop up from my phone to ask if I agree to connect to internet.  Could this be desactivated. I would thing of an option “local save” or “sync”
    - maybe I do something wrong but I can not add 2 notes successively.  After the first note has been added, I to to try Add List, come back and then I can add a new note

    Best regards

  • Mark Strathmore

Hi, I bought the app and am using it on N8 with Belle. While I can log in in the simple note Web site, the app keeps saying there is an authentication failure. Any suggestions?

    • http://www.talvbansal.com Talv

      Hi,

I just looked into this on my N8 using Belle also, I logged out and tried logging back in and got the same error as you, I ran the app again with a debugger running and the error looked to be an error at the Simple Note side of things, if you try again now mine seems to be working fine! Let me know if there are any more problems or if you can’t get it to log in still!

      • Mark Strathmore

Hi, thanks for coming back to me. Tried again now and still have the same error. I’ll check again in a few hours.

        Regards,

        Mark

Hi there, just a follow up here. Up until this morning, I was unable to log in, but today it magically started working… no idea why, but the only thing that changed is that I am using my work wifi instead of my home wifi or 3G to connect. Strange.

          Mark.

similar to experience of Mark Strathmore below, I bought SymNote for my E7 running Anna, and cannot get past login screen – or rather, I get to SimpleNote for about 1 second then it reverts to login screen with a blue panel saying ‘No Network Connection Available. Any Changed Data Will Attempt To Be Stored Locally.’ I have tried logging in with WiFi on and 3gG off, and vice versa. Nothing works. I can log in to Simplenote fine from my computer. Please advise.

    • Com4

screenshots of problem – gets into Simplenote for 1 sec then jumps back to login screen with error message – thanks for any help you can offer

          Hi Talv
Thanks for your reply, but it just says

is this a coded message that you have abandoned Symbian?!

          • http://www.talvbansal.com Talv

Hi, not sure why it did that but can you try deleting this file using the file browser c:/.config/talvbansal/SymNote.conf then trying again.

Just so you know i haven’t abandoned symbian im just using the lumia 800 i got from Nokia as my main device atm, my next app will be probably for wp7 though! (If theres enough demand i will port whatever wp7 apps i make to Symbian though!!)

Thanks, I tried that and it gets me a little further – to the Sync Options dialog – but then it goes back to the  login screen and ‘No Network Connection Available. Any Changed Data Will Attempt To Be Stored Locally.’

ok I think I have worked out the problem – I was using a gmail address with a + sign eg username+name@gmail.com -  I tried setting up another simplenote account with no + sign in the email address and SymNote is loading now. Thanks for your help and I look forward to using your app.

    Hi Talv,
after instaling the feature pack for Nokia Belle (Nokia 701), SymNote didn’t run correct. The start screen move to the top and then the screen is black.
Before installing the feature pack everythink runs correct.
    Thanks for any help,

Hi, I’m not sure why you’d get that error but I dont have a device with belle FP1 on to test / repeat the issue on. I’ve tried contacting nokia for access to one but have had no reply. I’ll be buying an 808 pureview next month so i wont be able to do anything till that point unfortunately.

I am using SymNote 2.2.0 on a N8 with Belle and since the latest update the “list” not does not work.  When I click the + to get a new note I get the dialog to choose either a text or a list note.  Whichever I choose I get a text note.  I can force a not to act as a list by setting the tag SymNoteList, but have lost the ability to create one easily.  (Not sure if this is the place for support requests but did not see the link for support)

       Hi Jim,

Its a bug that was reported this morning, I’ve already fixed it and the new build (2.2.1) is in QA at the moment, it was an odd bug that came about as a result of fixing another unfortunately. Hopefully within a week the new build will be with you :)

This site, my email or my twitter are all fine to contact me on for further issues :)

    Bugs (v2.2.1, Nokia N8 Belle):
    1. Offline mode data storing: I edited many of my notes on the phone, in offline mode (on the airplane). The app somehow cleared the content in these, and when went online, pushed the clearing on the server. Then despite all my efforts to restore it in the web, the phone keeps deleting the content. I took some time to replicate the error, and it looks like it happens with SymNoteList format notes. Therefore I manually removed these tags on the web, and resynced.

    2. Can you troubleshoot the offline mode? I use it very often,  when the phone is offline – like airplane, off-road, cinema, elevator, etc., and also to speed up work, as waiting to sync after every move is slow. Somehow the saving and editing doesn’t work the way I expect it to work in offline mode.

    3. List format: When I create a note in List format, and add a few items, save, go to main screen, go into the note, it becomes empty.
When I delete the SymNoteList tag, it works well.

    4. List format: When ticking off elements on a ToDo list (SymNoteList format), often the ticking reverts to the status before I opened the note. I stopped using it, because it creates confusion if something is completed or not. I recorded this bug before, because now in general the list format doesn’t work.

I made a post with feature suggestions, but I don’t see it anymore. Did it go trough?

Hmm ill have another look, but just so you know i literally just finished the dark oled theme and fixed the bug with font size saving so that will be available soon. Can you tell me what you’re doing to experience these crashes?
